basically Karuizawa and Hirata go on a double date with Ayanokoji and Sato (the girl) at the end she fully confesses to Ayanokoji and he shuts her down while Karuizawa happens to be spying...

later on Karuizawa becomes Ayanokojis girlfriend and in the novel they are in the second school year and are still together...

for the Horikita/Ayanokoji fanboys sorry but in the novel atleast Ayanokoji clearly says to Karuizawa he has not and can't ever trust Horikita at all, not because she herself is untrustable as a person but because they will inevitably see how to deal with things as opposites. rather because Ayanokoji is willing to completely destroy those who get in his way and she will want to win but not to the degree he sees as necessary.

Ayanokoji even says inside of his head to himself that he can view himself as genuinely falling in love with Karuizawa which he has never felt before...saying I quote "I wonder what it would feel like having another person be an essential part of my existense." while thinking of her.

True. interesting spoiler ahead he clearly tells this girl, the problem is with my own feelings, i won't date horikita and same goes for kushida too when she ask him why and what is the reason for his rejection to her proposal and ask whether is it because she's not good enuf or cause of horikita.
His obsessiveness over her is quite off the charts and later her obsessiveness too; vol 4 to vol 7 shows how he made her his completely and later when karuizawa threatened him that she wanted to date other guys he literally said I don't want you to become someone else's girl.
